ABSTRACT

Although creating experts enhances the reputation of a universi ty, faculty research also plays an often overlooked role in the func tioning of an institution. In times when public funding for higher education is tight, the overhead expense rate (ranging from 25 to 80 percent of the total value of a grant) charged to research grants can be used to augment the budget of the university. In addition, public universities that conduct more research and produce more doctoral students receive more state and public funding than those that have only limited or no doctoral programs. Thus research is important not only from the viewpoint of an individual faculty member but also from that of the university as a whole.
