ABSTRACT

Culture is an umbrella word that encompasses a whole set of implicit, widely shared beliefs, traditions, values, and expectations that characterize a particular group of people. It identifies the uniqueness of the social unit, its values and beliefs (Leavitt and Bahrami, 1988). Like nations, organizations, industries, and occupational groups have cultures too. Though, for the most part, these cultures have been neither extensively documented nor properly classified, the few case studies and short descriptions that were made enable us to draw the conclusion that they do exist. Thus we can speak of the cultures of physicians, lawyers, engineers, and computer programmers, to name just a few (Kunda, 1991; Couger et al., 1990). Some researchers such as Nash (1978) and Tyagi (1989) have suggested that tourists too have a culture of their own.
