Synthetic halogenated gomisin J derivatives have been of some interest to the development of drugs that potently inhibit cytopathological effects of HIV. The synthetic derivative showed an ED50 of 0.1-0.5 mM in human MT4 T-cells (Fujihashi et al., 1995). Immune Functions
Immunopotentiation. The in vitro immunomodulating activity of a water extract of schisandra on murine spleen cells of mice was shown by Yoshida et al. (1997). However moderate, dilutions of the extract (1:40, 1:60, and 1:640) significantly enhanced normal mouse spleen-cell proliferation, yet showed no natural killer (NK) cell activity-inducing or cytotoxic T cellinducing activity, and no effect on tumor necrosis factor (TNF) or interleukin-6 (IL-6) production by macrophages.
