ABSTRACT

The spread of the human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) epidemic continues to be a major cause of death in developing countries. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations AIDS program (UNAIDS), there are an estimated 5.8 million new infections each year, with 10 percent in children under 15, and 40 percent in women. In the Caribbean there are more than 360,000 people living with AIDS, 350,000 between the ages of 15 and 49, and 9,600 children 0 to 14 years.
