ABSTRACT

St. Ambrose University, located in Davenport, Iowa, and Augustana College, located in Rock Island, Illinois, are small liberal arts institutions situated on opposite banks of the Mississippi River. St. Ambrose University is an independent Catholic university offering four-year undergraduate programs in the liberal arts, pre-professional and careeroriented programs, and masters and doctoral programs. Approximately 3,500 students attend St. Ambrose University, including many non-traditional students. Augustana College is a private, four-year liberal arts undergraduate college founded by Swedish immigrants with ties to the Evangelical Lutheran Church. Student population is 2,200 at Augustana. Both institutions built new, state-of-the-art libraries in the 1990s. Because of their close proximity, the libraries often participate in shared activities.
