ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the numerous manifestations of the sexual callousness of men in contemporary society and then examines the ways in which such callousness is created, enhanced, and sustained by cultural conventions and media events. It concentrates on the various forms of erotica and their role in the enhancement and maintenance of sexual callousness. Several theoretical models that project facilitating influences are presented, pertinent research findings are reported, and the models are evaluated in the light of these findings. The discussion focuses on facets of pornography that contribute to callousness through their effect on cognitive and affective sexual schemata.
