ABSTRACT

The following chapter describes an eight-lesson course module in the statistical logic of a certain class of decision problems: a recurring choice between two options (say to accept or reject an applicant), where preference depends on which of two unknown conditions holds (e.g., the applicant is or is not qualified) and there is diagnostic information available. The module calls for a good deal of mathematical sophistication, such as might be appropriate for an elective upper-class high school course.
