ABSTRACT

It is interesting to ask, “What fraction knowledge do young children bring to school?” The expression “fraction knowledge” as used here needs to be defined. For example, does an ability to share 12 identical objects equally between two people constitute fraction knowledge? In this chapter we distinguish between fraction-related knowledge (such as sharing) and fraction knowledge. A person who knows that one-half of a group of 12 objects is 6 objects will be regarded as having fraction knowledge.
