ABSTRACT

We suspect that virtually everyone would agree that we can learn about reading from the pattern of eye movements and duration of eye fixations (see Rayner & Pollatsek, 1989). However, there is still a good deal of controversy over what kinds of inferences about cognitive processes can be made from the eye-movement record. In this chapter, we discuss what is known about the relationship between eye movements in reading and comprehension processes in order to explore the legitimacy of various types of inferences drawn from eye movement data.
