ABSTRACT
After a brief review of some of the sources of difficulty that students and teachers have with the learning and teaching of algebra, this chapter presents the outline of a new approach to the subject that is based on the centrality of the function and is deeply rooted in the use of multiple linked representations. Instantiating these representations in microcomputer software provides an opportunity for direct manipulation of both symbols and graphs. Early response to these materials has been encouraging.
