ABSTRACT

The company we study equips its middle-level managers, professionals and salespeople with advanced computer-based technologies. Yet, just having computers and modems does not mean these remote workers use them fully. Some start up their modems to share data, whereas others prefer to talk on the phone, or even start up their cars to meet their co-workers. In this Chapter, we compare two groups of employees at roughly the same organisational level in the same firm. We learn why one group depends on mediated technologies to bridge remote locales while the other chooses to meet face to face. They telework differently, and we try to locate the key sources of difference. In this Chapter we focus on the communication patterns which are a central part of how they telework.
