ABSTRACT
What is mathematical thinking? Although the chapters in this volume address a number of questions, certainly this question is the most fundamental. We can look at how to teach or assess mathematical thinking, at how mathematical thinking develops, or at how mathematical thinking differs across cultures, but in order to look at any of these things, first we have to understand what mathematical thinking is.
