ABSTRACT

The Malaysian education system is based on a national education policy that evolved from the education policies of the 1950s when Malaysia made its first moves toward independence. The education policy, refined in 1979, attempts to create a united and disciplined society that fulfills the requirements needed by the workforce of a country striving toward development. In many ways it has sought to combat the British colonial heritage, which had robbed the people of their pride and failed to foster unity or any sense of a national identity. Harmony has been the major aim for this young country with its diverse population.
