ABSTRACT
Since the publication of Lady Charlotte Guest's translation of the “mabinogion” between 1838 and 1849, medieval Welsh prose narratives not obviously translations of French or English texts have been conveniently divided into two groups, native tales and romances. Peredur Son of Efrawg raises these considerations in a particularly pointed manner. Peredur Son of Efrawg is a narrative that moves through a number of distinct episodes and sections. Most critics have accepted this structural feature of Peredur Son of Efrawg, that the tale can easily and convincingly be analysed into its constituent parts, though there is some disagreement on the details of the division. The last redactor of the long version has attempted to help the reader by providing a concluding sequence of adventures, partly based on, perhaps, a genuine “Story of the Castle of Wonders,” but also utilizing Perceval.
