ABSTRACT
Nearly 3 million dead and the loss of a quarter of the national wealth were the costs of the Pacific War for Japan; most analysts in 1945 predicted a dismal future as a second or third-rate power. To understand “the Japanese miracle” we must examine the war years, for modern Japanese capitalism was created in the crucible of conflict.
