ABSTRACT

Two of Bruno Gentili's many interests — Greek historiography and the history of communication — converged in reflections on Thucydides originally published in 1973 1 . This contribution to the collection in his honor returns to the theme he initiated and seeks indications in the text of the The Peloponnesian War that its author made the fact of writing, the mode itself of communication, part of his historiographical strategy. In order to approach this subject, three other senses of Thucydidean writing must be briefly noticed.
