ABSTRACT

This chapter is based on a statement originally prepared for presentation at the NAGPRA Review Committee meeting held in November 1994 at the New York State Museum in Albany. As practicing physical anthropologists, we were invited by the National Park Service to share our perspectives on the scientific value of human skeletal remains and discuss how their study contributes to our understanding of the past. Through our experiences at this meeting and in consultations with representatives of different Native American groups, we have found that our views on issues of reburial, repatriation, and the study of human remains have changed.
