ABSTRACT

Our analysis of Mexican globalization aims to illustrate the effect of globalization on the development of technological capabilities or competences. To this end we believe it important to distinguish between two types of firms: first, firms and industries dominated by foreign firms (FF, subsidiaries and joint ventures); second, firms and industries under the control of domestic firms (NF, including conglomerates and minority foreign participations). This distinction is applied to analyse production capacity and technological flows in recognition of the kind of interaction expected to occur within and between certain types of industries, and also between firms localized in Mexico and abroad.
