ABSTRACT

This book is an excellent reference for any therapist working in the areas of the multiply handicapped. It was written by a team composed of an occupational therapist, orthopedist, and physical therapist with specific chapters by a hand surgeon, an occupational therapist involved in seating systems and an orthotist. This team approach lends itself well to the subject matter since coordination of care is extremely important with this population. This revision of the text, originally published in 1983, is welcome today as an increasing number of those severely involved babies are being saved by high technology and will subsequently need therapy services for their entire lifetimes. It represents a compilation of information from many of the individual discipline's textbooks, journal articles, and obviously from much personal and in depth experience on the part of the professionals involved. The first few chapters are general in nature, aimed at the new practitioner or the therapist who deals only occasionally with these children. The real substance of the text follows with sections on orthopedic management of the spine, lower extremities and upper extremities; seating systems and orthotics; positioning and adaptive equipment.
