ABSTRACT

Generally defined, EAPs are employment based services whose purpose is to assist individuals experiencing personal problems, by assessing the nature of their difficulties, and by making referrals to appropriate helping resources (Alcohol and Drug Addiction Foundation, 1978). They operate within the context of the work environment and are consequently influenced by their positions within the organizational structure. Problem identification is generally made when the behaviour of the employee affects the quality of the work performance. EAPs are based on the premise that the workplace provides an ideal setting for this identification through deteriorating work, absenteeism, accidents, morale, etc.
