ABSTRACT
Why do older children solve problems more successfully than younger children; why do experts solve problems more successfully than novices; why do normal children solve problems more successfully than retardates? In all cases, the answer has much to do with the way that people within the two groups represent the problems in memory, that is, with how they encode them.
