ABSTRACT

This second volume samples the research insights that provide the foundation for new approaches to instruction in thinking and learning skills, and identifies directions for future research that will enhance that foundation. The last 20 years have seen a renaissance of serious scientific investigation of human intellectual capacities, research that is, as yet, reflected in only a few educational innovations. We hope that the new conceptualizations of human learning and thinking that appear in the chapters of this volume will capture educators' imagination and inspire instructional innovations to improve students' cognitive capacities. For we believe that instruction is a separate and distinct creative endeavor, by no means a straightforward application of the products of research. Research changes the nature of the conceptual framework within which that creativity is exercised, and the outlines of a new conceptual framework are emerging.
