ABSTRACT

Authoritarian education is no longer possible. One does not necessarily have to be a representative of radical antiauthoritarian education to agree with this point. Parents and teachers cannot simply make requirements without justifying them to their children or without convincing them and often leaving them enough freedom to choose. In this respect, the domain of education and its theory, i.e., pedagogy, reflect the general social and cultural situation of modern times, a situation whose key word is “freedom.” In the name of freedom, many wars have been and are still being fought, political revolutions have been plotted, and economic and social changes have been and are being demanded. These revolutions and changes are not only concerned with liberation from slavery or bondage, nor solely with religious liberty and freedom of conscience, nor the equal rights of hitherto discriminated groups. The struggle for freedom has penetrated even into education and its theory.
