ABSTRACT

Although the causes of learning disabilities are not well understood at the present time, the consequences of this cognitive disorder are known to be serious. Learning-disabled individuals find themselves at an increasing disadvantage in a culture tht assumes universal literacy and expects a prolonged education for its members. In addition to having fewer employment options and restricted socioeconomic opportunity, there is evidence that the learning-disabled population contains an overrepresentation of minority individuals (Rosner, Abrams, Daniels, & Schiffman, 1981). It is evident, then, that the learning disabled should be viewed as having multiple handicaps that can profoundly limit their achievements in today’s technological society.
