ABSTRACT

This essay explores issues in adoption crucial for the well-being of children raised in gay and lesbian families. How gays and lesbians form families, and the legal, emotional and political implications of family formation are included. Since adoption is the choice for many gays and lesbians, a broad look at the legal and political context is necessary as well as an examination of the changing practices in adoption. The authors advocate for adoption being available to prospective adoptive parents no matter what their sexual orientation and advocate for open adoption practices based on honesty and the absence of secrecy surrounding past adoption practices.
