ABSTRACT

Society traditionally has stereotyped incarcerated men and women as villains: calculating, evil, immoral, and inhuman beings. These images are evident in popular media but are wholly inaccurate, especially for women who are incarcerated. When one learns more about them, it is apparent that they are a population with needs and concerns similar to those of women in the rest of society. Unfortunately, the general public has little opportunity or time available to discover what is true about incarcerated women, relying instead on the stereotypes and supporting their banishment.
