ABSTRACT

There is a dearth of research on environmental issues in the UK service industry. This chapter attempts to partly redress this situation by focusing on the environmental image of the freight transport industry. Following a review of the literature on the greening of the transport industry, this chapter reports on a qualitative study, which was based on 65 in-depth interviews with key decision makers and different groups of influential opinion formers in the freight business. The study analyzes the perceived relative environmental impact of road and rail freight transport. Among others, views have been obtained on the importance and severity of nuisance factors arising from road and rail freight transport, the role of environmental considerations in transport decisions and the likely future environmental demands placed on this industrial service.
