ABSTRACT
‘The last Hindu kingdom of the world’, Nepal likes to declare herself: for long she saw herself as a stronghold against the West which had already overcome the other Indian kingdoms. On the basis of the old law books, the king was regarded as the protector of Hindu dharma. Both king and state saw themselves as the defenders of sacred values against a world in which not even the cow is holy any more.
