ABSTRACT

In 1889 one of the first mosques in Britain was built at Woking in Surrey with funds provided by the Begum Shah Jehan of Bhopal in India. In 1989 Muslims became prominent as a result of their outrage at Salman Rushdie’s novel, The Satanic Verses, and the intervention of an Iranian spiritual leader, the Ayatollah Khomeini. The century had seen many changes, both in British society and culture, and among Muslims themselves, but the events of 1989 dramatically demonstrated that substantial issues remained.
