ABSTRACT

As Montgomery (1990) argues, ‘It is not necessarily the curriculum but the pedagogy which is the barrier to the participation of children with learning difficulties.’ It is of importance therefore to examine some of the methods and materials in use in both mainstream and special schools. The teaching and learning strategies employed by teachers will depend on factors such as class size, the learning needs of the pupils in the class, the aims of the curriculum, the resources available and the amount of support provided. To a certain extent the personality and style of the teacher will also determine the way in which the class is run.
