ABSTRACT

I began the opening session of the conference by telling delegates about a practical model of learning I have been developing on the basis of the replies I gather from a wide range of people on how they learn best (for details see Race, 1994a). The key factors that emerge are:

the importance of ‘the want to learn’, or motivation

the fact that most learning is ‘by doing’, including practice, and trial and error

the importance of receiving feedback from other people

the need to make sense of what has been learned, or to ‘digest’ it.
