There has been more research on the learning and teaching of physics than on any other scientific discipline. Until recently, most investigations have focused on mechanics, particularly on kinematics and on the relation between force and motion. 1 The field of inquiry is now considerably broader and includes several other content areas such as heat, electricity, and optics.
