ABSTRACT

Writing a tutorial summary of “Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Learning of Mathematics” is a nontrivial task. AI resists easy entry, as anyone who has tried to read “elementary” introductory texts like Winston (1977) or Nilsson (1980) soon discovers. It is a broad and diverse field with its own concerns, jargon, and paradigms, few of which overlap in clear ways with mathematics education. How can one convey a sense of what AI has to offer to mathematics education (ME)?
