ABSTRACT

In Scotland, England and Wales, the rise in numbers of pupils excluded from school has provoked considerable concern amongst policymakers and professionals in education and beyond. In this chapter, we present the experience of one education authority in reducing the number of exclusions from its secondary schools. The first part of the chapter describes the background to the exercise. In the second part, we offer the education authority's findings in terms of the methods used and their effectiveness. The final part of the chapter offers a brief discussion of these findings and some implications for the next stage of the research.
