ABSTRACT

I imagine that most people can recall knowing at least one outstanding teacher. One with whom I worked had remarkable influence on her students, yet I find it hard to pinpoint just what it was that made her so effective. Was it because she was well-organized and confident? Or her obvious interest in her students and their knowledge that she wanted them to do well? Were they unwilling to disappoint her? Whatever the reasons, they appear to have been bound up with her personality, and that, unfortunately, retired with her. Her skills were not handed on to her colleagues, and the general level of teaching is neither better nor worse through her career.
