ABSTRACT

Tina, a four-year-old girl who has been diagnosed as having severe autism, is in the music room with Ginny, her teacher. Tina does not yet use any spoken language. There is also a ‘music specialist’ at the keyboard, facing into the room with a clear view. Throughout this session, the two adults work closely together. Whilst Ginny plays directly with Tina, Wendy accompanies and supports the interaction, responding with her voice and keyboard, with detailed attention to the timing, mood and energy of their movements and sounds. Four distinct episodes within the session are described below.
