ABSTRACT

The forests of the Pacific Rim fall into the three broad global groups: tropical, temperate, and boreal, as well as many more specific categories. They include the tropical forests of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Papua New Guinea; the temperate forests of the American Pacific Northwest and Chile; and the boreal or northern forests of Siberia, the Russian Far East, and Canada. Regardless of their ecological differences, these forests and all others are now tied together in a single, global market. This process had its genesis in, and continues to receive much of its impetus from, the Pacific Rim, which has become the major arena for the global timber trade.
