ABSTRACT

Concerns about ‘the environment’ cover an enormous range of issues, from the global problems of climate change, ozone depletion and the loss of biodiversity, to more localised issues of air and water quality, to parochial concerns such as litter, the provision of and access to urban green space and the existence of local environmental features such as trees or the village pond. The purpose of this part of the book is to explore how public policy should seek to address these issues. The specific focus of this chapter is the role of both economic analysis and the concept of sustainability in forming and informing environmental policy.
