ABSTRACT

The 1960s was a period of ‘explosive1 growth for tourism and a volume growth of 6-7 per cent a year was resumed after the energy crisis of the early 1970s (Shackleford, 1979). Tourist demand has been less stable in the 1980s with a flattening of demand in the period 1980-3 (OECD Tourism Committee, 1984), a revival signalled in 1983 and consolidated in 1984 (OECD Tourism Committee, 1985) and 1985 but falling back in 1986 if media reports to date are correct. Holidays abroad are therefore an established fact of life for millions of people resident in the developed countries.
