ABSTRACT

Volunteering is a prevalent form of unpaid work activity. In the United States, for example, almost 63 million Americans donated their time to volunteer work in 2010 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2011), making volunteerism a significant portion of the U.S. economy. Volunteer time in the US has recently been valued at over $20 per hour (Independent Sector, 2011), and the 8.1 billion hours of volunteer service in 2010 has been valued at $173 billion (Corporation for National and Community Service, 2011).
