ABSTRACT

Mozambique is situated in the southern part of Africa. It shares common borders with South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Swaziland. It has an area of 786,000 sq km, the size of Turkey. The population is about 14 million, the majority of whom are peasants living in the countryside (the 1980 census showed that 85 per cent of the active population were engaged in agriculture, 6 per cent in industry and 2 per cent in commerce), with many strongly diverse ethnic groups.
