ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews recent research on Indigenous language revitalization across Latin American and the Caribbean, and highlights four broad trends: (1) increasing engagement of Indigenous organizations and language revitalization groups with global discourses; (2) ways in which language revitalization efforts in this region are supported by global, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and development agencies; (3) the wide range of local dynamics as these language initiatives unfold, including community resistance in some contexts, and shifting and variable notions of language revitalization goals; and (4) trends towards greater local ownership and Indigenous leadership and control of these initiatives. This chapter examines the ways these trends have played out and intersected by reviewing recent research on Indigenous language revitalization in the region, with an emphasis on how global developments and discourses have interacted with local initiatives and agendas.
