ABSTRACT

In this chapter the psychotherapeutic significance of a photograph will be explored. The Finnish word for photograph ‘valokuva’ (composed of two words ‘light’ and ‘image’) provides insights for exploring the theme. ‘Light’ presents the light of life, but also shadows and darkness, while the ‘image’ carries meanings for people preceding verbal expression and interaction. In early childhood and already in the foetal stage, according to present knowledge, people have different mental images, body images and sensory images through which they perceive their existence.
