ABSTRACT

In this chapter the hypothesis that many important social attitudes can be ordered on one bipolar dimension will be investigated. In particular, an attempt will be made to answer the question as to whether there is any ground for distinguishing the construct of “authoritariaIlism”, as measured by the California “F”-Scale, from the traditional notion of “conservatism”. This question will be investigated (a) at the conceptual level, (b) in a review of previous empirical studies, and (c) in a new specially designed empirical study.
