ABSTRACT

Asian ethnic enclave economies such as Koreatown in Los Angeles provide important examples of immigrant strategies for finding “blended” combinations of both formal and informal employment. The racialization of immigrant employers and immigrant workers has led to stereotypes about immigrant work, further problematizing the idea of the “informal sector” as static, exploitative, and/or illegal arena of employment. Immigrants and ethnic minorities are often viewed as being limited to either secondary or low-wage formal employment, or relegated to informal employment as a result of difficulties accessing and entering the formal labor market.
