ABSTRACT
The impact of these news stories goes well beyond screening job applicants (Brady & Libit, 2006; Kluemper & Rosen, 2009; Lorenz, 2009). OSNs are also relevant for business purposes such as establishing business contacts, improving business processes, and maintaining business competitiveness (Fortino & Nayak, 2010). In this chapter, we aim to review the OSN literature placing an emphasis on how OSNs interface with occupational contexts. We start by describing what OSNs are and how they work, explaining key features of Facebook and LinkedIn, the two OSNs with the greatest relevance to professional contexts. Next we review the numerous ways in which OSNs interface with work contexts followed
by a discussion of how OSNs are used by organizations for marketing purposes. We conclude the chapter by identifying some important directions for new research in this domain.
