ABSTRACT

L andmines are a major military threat (Hambric & Schneck, 1996; LaMoe & Read, 2002) that all too often remain lethal or capable of maiming for years after the conflicts that led to their use have ended. Hidden and still armed, mines remain for years as a serious and long-lasting humanitarian hazard in lands where these weapons have been placed (MacDonald et al., 2003). Typically, individuals operate handheld equipment in close proximity to these hidden hazards to detect and subsequently disarm and dispose of them (Figures 2.1a, 2.1b).
