ABSTRACT
B ill Chase played a large role in my decision to join the Carnegie Mellon faculty. When I interviewed at Carnegie Mellon in 1974, the Carnegie Cognition Symposium volume, Visual Information Processing (Chase, 1973) had just been published. To help me choose between Carnegie Mellon and two other universities that were located in areas with noticeably better weather, I asked the department chairs from the three universities to recommend a few publications that reflected the kind of work valued in their departments. Lee Gregg, CMU's department chair at the time, sent me a copy of Bill's book, along with a number of other publications by CMU faculty.
