ABSTRACT

A new generation of learners is emerging. Many of these students are equipped with complex skills and have expectations that can sometimes be challenging to match. They are looking for more than a narrative. They want exploration, material and social interactivity, constant reinforcement and problem solving in an immersive environment. In many respects, education is the last institution to adapt to their world. This chapter explores how new technology such as social media and mobile technology can help history teachers bridge the gap between students’ expectations and the reality of a twenty-first-century classroom. It will also examine how new technologies such as Augmented Reality and Quick Response Codes (QR codes) can help connect the real world with the virtual world and provide opportunity to engage this new generation of history students.
