ABSTRACT
Pictures imagine the Child. At every stage in its modern history, visual representations have made childhood look natural. From the eighteenth century onward, each successively dominant image technique has persuaded us in its particular formal way. Oil portrait painting, mass-reproduced prints, analogue photography, digital photography, and now ultrasound medical imaging have each produced a vision of what it means to start human life.
